The junior research group of Dr. Rédouane Aherrahrou is looking for highly motivated Master’s students to join a diverse, dynamic, and motivated international research team.
Our research focuses on the role of genetic risk factors in vascular biology and cardiovascular diseases.
We use state-of-the-art molecular and cellular biology, multi-OMICs, computational biology, and bioinformatics approaches to advance novel mechanistic insights. Ultimately, our goal is to develop unprecedented therapeutic concepts to prevent and treat coronary artery calcification, atherosclerosis, and myocardial infarction in both men and women.
Profile/Requirements:
- Very good command of bioinformatics or computational biology
- Interest in the application of cell culture, vascular calcification, Single-cell CRISPR screening techniques
- Good written and spoken English
- Interest in the genetics and biology of cardiovascular diseases
- Accuracy and reliability, initiative, organizational skills, and a high sense of responsibility

Establishment and optimization of a protocol for the differentiation of endothelial cells from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hIPSC).
Background: Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Among these diseases is atherosclerosis. Here, micro-injuries of the inner vessel wall, the so-called endothelial layer, lead to inflammatory processes, fat deposition and tissue alteration. These processes lead to a narrowing and stiffening of the vessels, which can result in a heart attack. Endothelial cells play an important role in the development as well as in the progression of atherosclerosis. To understand these processes in more detail, we are working on a method to differentiate endothelial cells from stem cells and to use them for functional experiments.
Objective: To establish a protocol for efficient differentiation of endothelial cells from human induced pluripotent stem cells. Optimization of differentiation and adaptation of the protocol to different IPSC lines. Characterization of the differentiated cells and performance of functional studies.
